Chief Wellness Officer, Hackensack Meridian

Amy Frieman, MD, MBA, FAAHPM, is the Chief Wellness Officer for Hackensack Meridian Health, where she focuses on designing and shaping a uniquely positive, supportive, and productive operational environment and workplace experience for HMH team members.  


Dr. Frieman attended medical school at the University of Missouri - Kansas City where she was an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. After finishing her residency, Dr. Frieman remained on the faculty at Mount Sinai and obtained Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Serving as an Assistant Professor, she educated medical students and residents about palliative care while providing primary and palliative care to a homebound population as part of Mount Sinai’s Visiting Doctors Program. Dr. Frieman’s academic career at Mount Sinai included a special focus on burnout among medical residents.


In 2010, she joined HMH as Corporate Medical Director of Palliative Care Services. In that role, she served as the Medical Director of a Medicare Demonstration Program that brought palliative care into the home for over 3700 patients. As Corporate Medical Director for Palliative Care, she expanded HMH’s palliative care services across the continuum of care to include the inpatient, skilled nursing facility, outpatient and home settings. In 2016, the program was awarded the American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life Citation of Honor. Dr. Frieman is a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and was named an Inspirational Leader in Hospice and Palliative Medicine Under 40 by the AAHPM. Dr. Frieman obtained her MBA from Monmouth University in 2018 where she received the MBA Academic Achievement Award and the Beta Gamma Sigma Excellence in MBA award.


Dr. Frieman is active in well-being initiatives on a regional and national level, serving on the Clinician Wellbeing Advisory Group of the Greater NY Hospital Association and the Collaborative for Healing and Renewal in Medicine’s Chief Wellness Officer group. Under her leadership, HMH achieved the NJBiz Workplace Wellness Hero award in 2020. Dr. Frieman is focused on organizational interventions that remove barriers in order to highlight and develop the innate talent, skills, knowledge, and collaborative nature of HMH team members.
